Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" album debuts at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart with 1,108,000 copies sold in its first week, according to Nielsen SoundScan. It's only the 17th album to sell a million in a week since SoundScan began tracking sales data in 1991, and the highest sales week since 2005.
"Born This Way" also marks Gaga's first No. 1 album — "The Fame" debut peaked at No. 2, while "The Fame Monster" EP reached No. 5 and dance effort "The Remix" hit No. 6.Additionally, Gaga is only the fifth woman to notch a million-plus week.
For once again, Lady GaGa’s legions of die hard fans have taken her straight to #1, this time on the Official UK Top 40 album Chart with her new album ‘Born This Way‘.This marks another UK #1 album for the starlet who enjoyed the same feat with previous releases, ‘The Fame‘ and its sister album ‘The Fame Monster‘. Moreover, the feat sees the singer break British chart record.
Beating Adele’s‘21′ to this week’s top spot, GaGa also has cause to celebrate, as ‘Born’ sold an impressive 215,000 units, becoming in the process the fastest selling album released here this year.
GaGa said:
“I feel so honoured to have the highest first-week sales in the UK this year. I wrote the album’s first single ‘Born This Way’ in Manchester because I was so inspired by the confidence and bravery characteristic of my fans, little monsters. To the United Kingdom, thank you for believing in me.”
She worked hard for every single copy sold, but it looks like Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” will join the rarified club of artists whose album sells more than 1 million copies in its opening week. Lady Gaga poised to sail past 1 million on Billboard 200 next week
Original predictions were that “Born This Way” would move around 800,000 copies, but that was before Amazon sold it for 99 cents for two days. The promotion, as troubled as it was by some downloading problems, will help send the album over the 1.15 million mark, predicts Billboard. The last artist to surpass the mark was Taylor Swift with "Speak Now" last fall.
