It’s hard to remember this now, but Lady Gaga’s sartorial beginnings were humble, with her fashioning bras from halves of disco balls and tying her hair in a bow. (You can see exclusive images of the early Lady Gaga in Vanessa Grigoriadis’s cover feature, “Growing Up Gaga.”) Eventually, she would paste a zipper over her eye for her American Idol debut, and wear a coat made entirely from Kermit the Frog dolls. As her fashion sense became more avant-garde, her fame sky-rocketed. Her uniform for the past year has often just consisted of drag-queen heels and underwear, whether she’s appearing in a fashion magazine spread or simply walking to her car.
