There’s a returning heroine at the top of Billboard’s European Albums chart, as Lady Gaga’s “The Fame” (Interscope/Universal) goes back to No. 1 in its 65th week. That makes for another double triumph for the pop superstar, whose “Telephone” duet with Beyoncé becomes the new No. 1 on European Hot 100 Singles.
“The Fame,” which was previously No. 1 across Europe for a week last April and six more this January and February, is back up 2-1 for a fourth separate run at the top in the United Kingdom, on weekly sales of a lowly 25,000. It also bounces back 11-7 in France and holds at No. 9 in Germany. It replaces Amy Macdonald’s “A Curious Thing (Mercury/Universal) which falls to No. 2 after three weeks at the overall summit. Macdonald does however move back 2-1 in Switzerland.
Justin Bieber is up again, 4-3, on the aggregate chart with “My World” (Universal Island/Def Jam), after racing 6-1 in Ireland and holding at No. 3 in the United Kingdom. The augmented “My Worlds” version of the album climbs 35-17 on European Albums in its own right, climbing 10-8 in France.
After an overall debut at No. 2, Madonna’s “Sticky & Sweet Tour” (Warner Bros.) falls to No. 4, declining 2-4 in Italy and 3-7 in Spain, but climbing 37-5 in Poland. Black Eyed Peas’ perennial “The E.N.D. (The Energy Never Dies)” (Interscope/Universal) holds at an overall No. 5, moving 8-6 in France. Unheilig’s “Grosse Freiheit” (Universal) is up 10-6, returning to its European Albums debut and peak position of seven weeks ago after a 2-1 climb in Germany.
The one new entry on the pan-European top ten album chart – at No. 7 – is the German heavy metal, two-album project “The Wicked Symphony/Angel of Babylon” (Nuclear Blast/Warner Music) by Avantasia. It’s new at No. 2 in Germany.
Ireland’s Boyzone spends a third straight week at No. 8 with the former U.K. No. 1 “Brother” (Polydor/Universal). It narrowly misses out on extending its run at the top of the British chart, with only 282 sales fewer than those for the Lady Gaga album there last week.
Sade’s “Soldier of Love” (Epic/Sony Music Entertainment) falls 6-9 on the Europe-wide survey, and Scorpions’ “Sting In The Tail” (RCA/Sony Music Entertainment) 9-10. The Sade title is down 1-2 in Poland, while Scorpions edges down 3-4 in Germany. Outside the collective top ten, there’s a No. 15 debut for guitar hero Slash’s self-titled Roadrunner album, which arrives at No. 3 in Switzerland.
The Lady Gaga/Beyoncé single has taken 11 weeks to rise to the European Hot 100 Singles summit, jumping from No. 3 as it spends another week at No. 1 in Ireland and jumps 6-4 in Switzerland. Black Eyed Peas’ “Rock That Body” jumps 19-6 on European Hot 100 Singles and Usher’s “Omg” (LaFace/Sony Music Entertainment), featuring Peas’ will.i.am, is up 32-11.
